No.28    Hashimoto Kansetsu Retrospective at Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art

       from Sep 10-Oct 20  橋本関雪回顧展                          9/24/2013

In celebration of the 130th anniversary of the artist’s birth, the Hyogo Museum presents around 70 of his best-known paintings. I went to see his works last Thursday.

Hashimoto Kansetsu ( 1883-1945) was a Kobe-born painter of Japanese-style paintings –nihonga and he was active in the early 20th century. He was based in Kyoto, where his former residense, Hakusasonsou ( 白沙村荘 ), near Tetsugaku-no-michi ( Philosopher’s Walk ), is also a museum of his work. Kansetsu spent much time in China and painted many works on the themes derived from its literature or history and in addition, he had opened a new area called the Shin(new)-Nanga or neo Southern school at the forefront of Japanese painting circles during from Taisho to Showa-era. Also he shows superior competence with  animal painting, and he left many masterpieces. His work melds classical traditions with a modern edge, the often-portrayed animals imbued with a human-like presence and psychological depth lacking in traditional Japanese or Chinese paintings, which can be deeply moving. In celebration of the 130th anniversary of the artist’s birth, the Hyogo museum presents around 70 of his best-known paintings in this retrospective exhibition.

As you know, Hakusasonsou near Tetsugaku-no-michi ( Philosopher’s Walk), is a masterpiece of his life. It is a wonderful Japanese garden. I have been on  location recording a program once in this garden and I was able to tape the program with a very beautiful background. It very near to the Ginkakuji Temple and the beautiful environment of the Higashi-yama Moutains. I want to privately visit here after a long time to enjoy the arrival of autumn maple leaves.
