[ No.6 ] One Snow Day      2.12, 2013

Last Friday morning, on Feb.8, it snowed in Kobe. Snow is rare and it was the third time this year and also this winter has been very cold compared with usual years. This time it snowed only in the early morning.

On that morning, an anti-cold marathon race of high school students was held near my house. Maybe it was Fukiai High School students (boys and girls) and I was watching their race from my balcony. I watch every year and it is always held on a very cold day and often there’s snow. This year, when the race started, it was snowing gently and they ran about 10 km of the Harbor Walk running course near my house. More than 300 students participated. One week before, some junior high school students of this area held the same marathon race on this course and it was a fine day. The high school boys and girls were very unlucky but I think they must have enjoyed fine running. When they finished the race, it cleared and it became a fine day.

In the afternoon, it was very cold, but I went to see the movie “Les Miserables”. It is a reputed movie based on a novel of the same name by Victor Hugo which was a musical masterpiece that was a big hit on stage in 43 countries worldwide. The film has an all-star cast incdluding Hugh Jackman(as Jean Valjean), Russell Crowe (as Javert), Anne Hathaway(as Cosette) and others. The director of the film, Tom Hooper, won an academy award for ‘The King’s Speech’. I like musicals but this time it didn’t fit me because I knew the story and the songs don't fit well but on the other hand, it was a very hot theater. In the theater, I was satisfied with it’s atmosphere of comfortable heat. High school students may have enjoyed sports under the cool sky and I also enjoyed the hot theater. I am very envious of those lively boys who can run under a cold and cool sky as I am not so young now.
