[No.37] Yojijukugo 四字熟語, Four character phrase         10/14/2014

Yojijukugo are 4-character phrases which can express all things in the universe with Chinese Kanji. This can only be done with vividly drown ideograms ( not alphabets ). Some Japanese use four character phrases as mottos and the most important phrases center around bonding with people, a peaceful home, and being cordial and whole-hearted. Through yojijukugo we see the image of good Japanese people. Which phrases would rank high for Americans? Professor Robert Campbell, who is at the top of Japanese literature at Tokyo University suggests the following would be at the top: "Ifudodo威風堂々 : majestic dignity " (Japanese 26th place), " Futoufukutsu不撓不屈 : indomitableness " (47th place), and " Kiusoudai気宇壮大 : magnificent attitude" (88th place)," Tenimuho天衣無縫 : flawless composure"(52nd place),  "Toisokumyo当意即妙 : repartee" (64th place), ” Meikaikattatsu  明快闊達 : generosity" (87th place) will be the top in the United States. He says “ Fugenjikko

不言実行” : would not place at the top because it is not in unison with the American ideal of living freely in a wide land with strength and humor.
If I were asked about yojijukugo for my self, it would be “ Isshokenmei 一所懸命 : eagerness " .

Tigers blank Carp in CL series opener

                                                    Hanshin Tigers

Would the HanshinTigers closer taking the mound be the overpowering Oh Seung Hwan who led the central League with 39 saves, or the one who blew a number of saves down the stretch?

The three Hiroshima Carp batters who were consecutively struck out by Oh would likely say it was the former, as the South Korean put the final touches on a 1-0 victory by the Tigers on Saturday afternoon in the opening game of the first stage of the Central League's Climax Series.

Starter Randy Messenger allowed four hits over eight scoreless innings and Kosuke Fukudome homered off Hiroshima ace Kenta Maeda to account for the lone run before 46,721 at Koshien.

Messenger, who went 13-10 with a 3.20 ERA, allowed two-out singles in the first inning by Rainel Rosario and Brad Eldred, but got Ryuhei Matsuyama to ground out to first to end the inning.

Eishin Soyogi led off the second inning with single to right, but Messenger struck out the next three batters in order.

Messenger finished with six strikeouts and one walk to outduel Maeda, who allowed seven hits, including Fukudome's one-out home run in the sixth inning, over six innings. He struck out six, walked one and hit one butter with a pitch.                                            The Japan News by The Yomiuri Shinbun

Hanshin Tigers starting pitcher Atsushi Nomi delivers against Hiroshima's Brad Eldred during their 0-0 tie in Game 2 of the Central League Climax Series first stage on Sunday. The result allowed Hanshin to advance to the final stage.

Tigersthe advance to Central League final despite tie
The Hanshin Tigers advanced to the final stage of the Central League playoffs on Sunday thanks to a 0-0 tie with the Hiroshima Carp in Game 2 of the Central League Climax Series first stage.

Nippon Professional Baseball's rules limit Climax Series games to 12 innings and award any series that is tied to the higher-seeded team. The Tigers were therefore declared the winner of  the best-of-three series on the strengs of one win and one tie.

The Carp, who sewpt Hanshin in two games here last year, were held scoreless in 21 innings, including their 1-0 Game 1 loss on Suturday. The Tigers will take on the Yomiuri Giants at Tokyo Dome in a best-of-seven final stage that gives the Giants a one-win advantage and allows Yomiuri to advance should that series end in a tie.

Tigers closer Oh Seung-hwan picked up for ace Atsushi Nomi in the eighth and worked three scoreless innings. Shinobu Fukuhara got the requisite three outs in the top of the 12th to seal the tie and knock the Carp out of the playoffs.

This is the first time the Tigers have reached the finalstage, having lost each of their four previous first-stage series.

               聖書の言葉 from The Bible

”I am Alpha and Omega, the begining and the end, the first and the last.”
