Long-Distance Sleeper Express
The other day, March 12, the bed limited express ‘Twilight Express’ which runs along the Sea of Japan coast for 1, 500 km going from Osaka to Sapporo in 22 hours, had its last running ( Last-Run) and many railroad enthusiasts and fans came out for the event. It was regrettable that not everyone was able to get on even though many people wanted to be on the ‘Last Run ’ of the popular “Blue-Train” .
Let me talk about my memories of the bed limited express train. I remember clearly the time that I moved from Fukuoka to Kansai in the spring of 1956. I was 16 years old. I attended an entrance ceremony of the first grade of high school in Fukuoka and immediately I moved to Takarazuka and entered prefectural Itami High School in the Hyogo prefecture school district. From Fukuoka to Kobe, we took ‘Asakaze’ super express, a long-distance sleeper, and I came to Kansai with an inflated chest of hope. It was the end of April, soon after the high school entrance ceremony when I came to Kansai. Interestingly, when I was 6, I had elementary school entrance ceremonies twice because I had been evacuated to my father’s hometown and I was moved to Fukuoka - the center of Kyshu - to receive better educational surroundings. Because my father was sick, there were many problems at home, but at that time I experienced two entrance ceremonies in Kyushu. I lived for nine years in Fukuoka and I lived in Takarazuka and Kobe until graduating from university.
At that time, I got off at Kobe Station with my family at about 6:00 in the morning. It was a long-distance night train ride of nearly 12 hours, but I did not feel fatigued because I was full of hope. I do not remember the scenery from the inside of the train on the way at all, but I still remember the first impression when I saw the town of Kobe. I vividly remember the feeling of big hope overflowing. Now, it is possible for us to go by air to Fukuoka in just a little over one hour. Even the Shinkansen is three hours, but it went without thinking in those days. Now I belong to another age. When I watched the news of the last running of the Twilight Express, I remembered my different trip on limited express trains, and nostalgia just came out.
However, when I followed my far-off memory, the bed limited express ‘ Asakaze’ seemed to be the Blue-Train that made its debut as the latest bed limited
express between Tokyo and Hakata when I was 16 years old in 1956. Everybody seemed to be surprised at saying that it passed Osaka at ‘Night’, but the bed limited express which I got on should
have arrived at Kobe early in the morning. I might be thinking of a different train.
