The Recession of Setonaikai Inland Sea
A bid meeting of cultured seaweed was made on January 27 in Harima-cho, Hyogo, which faces Setonaikai Inland Sea. While seaweed which shines black was present, they also had seaweed which fades to white. As for the white seaweed, the appearance and the taste are inferior and it is difficult to set it at the usual price. The production of the cultured seaweed – a local specialty of Hyogo – is about 1,200,000,000 sheets ( in fiscal 2013). This is the 2nd highest production in the whole country following Saga, but the faded color disturbs seaweed producers. One of the possible causes is a decrease in the nutrient concentration of nitrogen and phosphorus. About 40% of the components of seaweed are based on protein made from the nutrient salt, so changes in the concentration greatly affects its growth. Setonaikai was once known as a "dying sea" because of water pollution caused by effluent factory waste, but now national measures and policies have been developed and the water quality keeps improving. Some voices have questioned "poor nutrition” , so the country began to work out countermeasures. Such is the impact of such discoloration of seaweed.
Nutrient salt is included in drainage of factories or in addition to its natural origin. The density in Setonaikai rose sharply and nutrition increased from 1960-1970. As the plankton had increased too much and led to ‘red tide’, to avoid injuring the fishing industry, the country advanced processing of sewage and drainage. The east part of Setonaikai is shallow and the quantity of water is low. Also the percentage of nutrient salt from land is high, so the density tends to be changeable. In order to increase undersea nutrient salt moderately, Hyogo Associated Fisheries began to support drainage work in an agricultural irrigation pond from fiscal year 2008, as it contains rich nutrients in its muddy water. As with the problems of the aging farmer, the Associated Fisheries helped those farmers’ work. But the water temperature is decreasing as well as the population of fishermen. Also nutrition is heavily influenced by nutrient salt from land and also from the bottom of the sea or the open sea beginning to melt. Moreover, the effects of reclamation must also be considered. Those measures are advancing gradually, but to solve the problem is difficult.
A clean sea isn't only about the clarity or the color. A rich sea is
difficult to maintain. Concerning the efforts aimed at biodiversity and productive sea, ‘What is needed now ?’.

Spring has come !
Kobe China Town, Nankinmachi
